Karachi Submerged: Unprecedented Monsoon Rains Trigger Widespread Flooding
Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17
Karachi, Pakistan – September 10, 2025 – Karachi is currently experiencing severe flooding following unprecedented monsoon rains that began on September 8, 2025. Torrential downpours, caused by a low-pressure system from the Bay of Bengal, have led to the overflow of the Malir and Lyari rivers, submerging major transportation routes like the M-9 Motorway and causing significant disruptions.
In response to the escalating crisis, a rain emergency has been declared. Rescue operations are actively underway, with the Pakistan Army, Rangers, and Rescue 1122 teams working to evacuate residents from flooded areas. Successful rescues have been reported in neighborhoods such as Saadi Town, where 11 individuals were safely moved to higher ground. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab described the water pressure in the Malir and Lyari rivers as "unprecedented" and the situation as "dangerous."
The Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued warnings of very high floods and continued torrential rains across the province. The Indus River at Guddu is also projected to reach very high flood stages, intensifying the overall crisis. Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid low-lying areas as the situation remains critical.
Karachi's drainage system, designed for approximately 40mm of rainfall, has been overwhelmed by up to 178mm in some areas, leading to widespread waterlogging and severe traffic disruptions. Monsoon activity is expected to persist until the end of the month, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasting more heavy rainfall due to a deep depression over northern Gujarat, India, moving towards Pakistan. This system is expected to bring strong winds and extreme downpours, increasing the risk of flash and urban flooding.
