A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck offshore near Marmaris, Turkey, on June 2, 2025, resulting in one fatality and numerous injuries. The underwater quake, originating 10 kilometers (6 miles) off the coast of Marmaris at a depth of 67.91 kilometers (42.1 miles), strongly shook the Mugla province in southwestern Turkey, triggering widespread panic in the popular tourist region.

A 14-year-old girl, Afranur Gunlu, died after suffering a panic attack and being rushed to the hospital in Fethiye. Approximately 70 others sustained injuries as they jumped from their residences in fear. Initial assessments indicate no major structural damage, with most injuries resulting from panic.

Inspection services are continuing their evaluations in the affected areas. The region remains under surveillance, with authorities concerned about potential aftershocks. The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) is monitoring the situation. The earthquake was also felt in surrounding provinces, including Aydin, Denizli, Manisa, and Izmir.
