Why Rocks on the Bottom of the Pacific Breathe Better Than Forests
Author: Svetlana Velhush

In April 2026, humanity learned that the ocean is capable of breathing without the help of plants. At a depth of 4 kilometers, in the icy darkness of the abyssal plains, a source of life has been discovered that does not depend on the Sun. This discovery calls into question everything we knew about the appearance of the first aerobic organisms on Earth.
1. Electrolysis in the Dark: Nature as an Engineer
The seabed is strewn with metal "potatoes." Research has shown that these nodules function as natural galvanic cells. The potential difference between the layers of metals inside the rock creates a current.
"We have literally found batteries in the rocks," researchers state. This current splits water, supplying oxygen to deep-sea ecosystems that were previously thought to survive only on meager remains from "above."
2. The Collapse of the Photosynthesis Theory?
We previously believed that all oxygen on the planet was a byproduct of photosynthesis by cyanobacteria and plants, which emerged about 2.4 billion years ago. "Dark oxygen" proves that life could have begun breathing before it rose to the light. This changes our search for life on Mars or Jupiter's moon Europa—there may be "battery-rocks" there as well.
3. High Politics on the Ocean Floor
The discovery of "dark oxygen" is a disaster for the deep-sea mining industry. These metals (nickel, manganese) are critically important for the "green" transition and Tesla batteries. But it is now clear: by taking these rocks, we are not just "digging ore," we are switching off the life-support system of the ocean.
