New Orchid Species, the Rasmussen Star Orchid, Illuminates Colombia's Rich Biodiversity

Edited by: An goldy

A new species of orchid, the Rasmussen Star Orchid (Epidendrum rasmussenii), has been discovered in the cloud forests of Colombia's Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. This finding highlights the region's significant biodiversity and the importance of conservation efforts.

The Rasmussen Star Orchid, characterized by its crimson-red and yellowish-green flowers, was identified by researchers within the ProAves El Dorado Reserve. This reserve, managed by Fundación ProAves with support from Conservation Allies, is a critical sanctuary for unique species. Due to its extremely limited distribution, the orchid has been classified as endangered, emphasizing the urgent need to protect its habitat.

Dr. Paul Salaman, President of Conservation Allies, stated, "The Rasmussen Star Orchid highlights Colombia's extraordinary biodiversity and the urgent need to continue research and conservation efforts to protect the country's threatened forests." The discovery is seen by the scientific community as a tribute to nature's beauty and a call for its preservation.

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is renowned for its biological wealth and cultural significance, being the ancestral home to Indigenous communities. The discovery of this new orchid species enhances scientific understanding of Colombian orchids and reinforces the importance of protecting these lands. The region's unique geography fosters a high number of endemic species, making it a global biodiversity hotspot. The El Dorado Reserve alone is home to approximately 420 bird species, including the Santa Marta Parakeet, and numerous endemic amphibians and plants.

Named in honor of Nathan Jens Rasmussen for his family's conservation support, the Rasmussen Star Orchid's habitat is increasingly threatened by deforestation, agricultural expansion, logging, and climate change. The discovery, detailed in the scientific journal Phytotaxa, underscores the vital role of conservation areas like the El Dorado Reserve in safeguarding natural heritage. The reserve's initiatives in reforestation, renewable energy, and habitat protection serve as a model for conservation in Latin America.
