The Argentinian wine industry is grappling with significant challenges stemming from a high tax burden. A report from the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (UNCuyo), commissioned by the Corporación Vitivinícola Argentina (COVIAR), indicates that the tax burden in 2025 will represent 57.1% of the "pure surplus" of production for a vineyard and 62.4% for a winery.
This "pure surplus" is defined as the difference between total revenue and costs, excluding taxes. The tax pressure is considerably higher than in countries like Chile, where taxes represent 33.3% for vineyards and 42.4% for wineries. Furthermore, Argentina's export logistics costs are significantly higher than those of neighboring countries, exacerbating the competitive imbalance.
In response to these challenges, the IWC Wine Industry Awards Argentina 2025 will be held on September 25, 2025, in Buenos Aires. This event aims to celebrate excellence in the Argentinian wine industry. Additionally, in April 2025, a group of 30 representative entities of the wine industry opposed a bill that seeks to dissolve COVIAR, arguing that it would negatively affect the planning and strategy of the Argentinian wine industry.
