Rex rats have carved out a special niche among enthusiasts of exotic pets, largely due to their distinctive, soft, and distinctly wavy coats. This unique texture is the direct result of a dominant genetic mutation affecting the 'rex' gene, which fundamentally alters how the hair follicles develop and grow. This genetic quirk is so pronounced that even the whiskers of these rodents exhibit a noticeable curl.

In the context of domesticated rodents, the presence of the 'Re' (Rex) gene in a heterozygous state (Rere) produces the characteristic 'rex' effect. However, when an animal inherits the dominant homozygous form (ReRe), it can lead to a condition known as 'double-rex.' This more extreme genetic expression sometimes manifests as a complete absence of fur, resulting in a hairless appearance.

Temperamentally, Rex rats are generally known for being quite placid and possessing an active, inquisitive nature. They are playful companions, and their notable intelligence allows them to learn commands, master simple tricks, and readily recognize their own names. This combination of gentle demeanor and smarts makes them engaging pets.

Under optimal care conditions, including a balanced diet and an environment free from undue stress, Rex rats typically enjoy a lifespan of up to three years. This is a significant improvement over their counterparts in the wild, whose survival window rarely extends beyond eighteen months.

Establishing the correct habitat is crucial for their well-being. For a small group of these rats, the minimum recommended enclosure size should measure 60x40x30 cm. Suitable housing options include wire cages with closely spaced bars or glass terrariums, provided they are equipped with a well-ventilated lid. For bedding, aspen shavings or paper-based materials are recommended. It is imperative to strictly avoid cedar or pine shavings, as the phenols they contain pose potential respiratory hazards to the animals.

Maintaining the right environmental parameters is key to their health. The ideal temperature range for keeping Rex rats comfortably is between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius, coupled with a relative humidity level maintained between 50 and 60 percent.

The living space must actively encourage their natural behaviors. Owners should ensure the provision of solid-surface exercise wheels, various tunnels for exploration, multi-level platforms, safe hiding spots, and appropriate chew toys to help manage their continuously growing teeth.

Daily spot-cleaning of soiled bedding is a non-negotiable requirement, as is ensuring constant access to fresh, clean drinking water. A complete substrate change, along with a thorough disinfection of the cage, should be performed at least once every two weeks, though weekly cleaning is preferable for optimal hygiene.

The foundation of their diet should be a high-quality, commercially prepared rodent pellet food. This base diet should be supplemented sparingly with small amounts of fresh vegetables or occasional protein boosts, such as mealworm larvae.

Given their inherently social nature, keeping Rex rats in isolation can induce significant stress. They thrive on interaction with their own kind, meaning they are best housed in pairs or small groups to meet their social needs.
