Togo's Educational Transformation: Positive Discipline for a Brighter Future

The Togolese Ministry of Technical Education, Vocational Training, and Apprenticeship (METFPA), in collaboration with Plan International Togo and GIZ Togo, has initiated a transformative program to foster a more nurturing and effective learning environment. This initiative, part of the ProEmploi+ program, aims to equip teachers with training in Positive Discipline, a methodology developed by psychologist Jane Nelsen. The approach moves away from punitive measures, embracing kindness and firmness to create inclusive and respectful classrooms, particularly in vocational training centers across Togo.

The training is a key component of Togo's Education Sector Plan 2020-2030, which addresses the need for quality education and combats school violence. This commitment to positive discipline reflects a deeper understanding of the educational process, recognizing that true learning flourishes in an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding. By focusing on encouragement and support, educators are helping students to develop self-discipline and a sense of responsibility, which are essential for their personal growth and success.

This approach recognizes that every child possesses unique talents and abilities, and that the role of the teacher is to nurture these gifts, not to stifle them. The emphasis on creating a safe and supportive learning environment is a crucial step towards ensuring that all students have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
