Navigating Emotional Education: A Guide for Parents and Educators

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

The recent mandate for emotional education in Colombian schools presents a significant shift in the educational landscape. From an educational context, this initiative offers a valuable opportunity to equip students with essential life skills. The integration of emotional competencies into the curriculum, as mandated by the Colombian government, is designed to foster well-rounded individuals.

A key aspect of this reform involves assessing students' emotional intelligence, including autonomy and interpersonal skills. According to a study by the OECD, students with high emotional intelligence demonstrate better academic performance and overall well-being. This aligns with the Colombian initiative, which aims to prepare students for both academic and social challenges. Furthermore, the inclusion of emotional competencies in state exams, as highlighted by the ICFES, marks a departure from traditional assessment methods.

In the United States, a similar emphasis on social-emotional learning (SEL) has been gaining traction. Many schools are implementing SEL programs to address students' mental health and social skills. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) has found that SEL programs can improve students' academic performance by 11 percentile points. This underscores the global relevance of Colombia's approach.

The Colombian initiative also provides a framework for educators to integrate emotional education into their teaching practices. The focus on emotional well-being and life skills is expected to create a more supportive learning environment. The implementation of this law is a step towards a more holistic approach to education, preparing students for success in all aspects of their lives.
