As people age, cognitive functions often decline, leading to memory loss, reasoning difficulties, and concentration problems. While a balanced diet is crucial for brain health, ginkgo biloba, an ancient plant, has gained attention for its benefits.

Originating from Asia, ginkgo biloba has been used for over 2,000 years as a natural remedy. Its leaves possess recognized medicinal properties, particularly for treating dementia-related issues and improving blood circulation.

According to Professor of Botany at CEU San Pablo University in Madrid, ginkgo biloba is a deciduous tree cultivated for both ornamental and medicinal purposes, with significant cultivation centers in the United States, Europe, and Korea.

The plant not only enhances memory and mental performance but also optimizes cerebral blood circulation, ensuring adequate oxygen and nutrient supply to brain cells.

Dr. Carmen Rubio, a pharmacy expert at the University of Laguna in Tenerife, emphasizes the presence of medicinal compounds in ginkgo leaves, including flavonoids, ginkgolides, and bilobalides, which help combat stress, anxiety, and age-related cognitive decline.

Ginkgo biloba can be consumed in capsule form, liquid extracts, or infusions. Studies indicate its effectiveness in early-stage Alzheimer’s patients and individuals experiencing stress or anxiety.

However, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) notes that the only approved indication for ginkgo is to improve cognitive decline associated with aging and enhance quality of life in cases of mild dementia. While it does not prevent disease progression, it may alleviate symptoms.

Traditionally, ginkgo leaves have also been used to treat various conditions.

Despite its benefits, caution is advised when using ginkgo biloba. Its seeds, whether raw or roasted, can be toxic. The plant is not recommended for children, pregnant women, or nursing mothers. Consultation with a healthcare provider is essential before adding any supplement or medicinal plant to one’s routine.
