Diwali 2024: A Festival of Lights Celebrated in India

Diwali, a prominent Hindu festival, is celebrated across India on October 31, 2024. Known as the Festival of Lights, it symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

The origins of Diwali trace back to ancient texts, notably the Brahma Purana, which recounts the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi to homes at midnight on Kartik Amavasya. This day also marks the emergence of Lakshmi from the churning of the ocean, leading to the practice of Lakshmi Puja.

Celebrations span five days, beginning with Dhanteras and concluding with Bhai Dooj. Rituals involve prayers not only to Goddess Lakshmi but also to deities such as Ganesh, Kuber, Saraswati, and Kalika. Homes, shops, and factories are adorned with lights and decorations as families perform puja to seek blessings for prosperity and success.

This year, while most will celebrate on October 31, the auspicious time for business puja is set for November 1, post 3 PM. Essential items for the rituals include kumkum, sandalwood, flowers, and various offerings.

Diwali fosters a spirit of community, with families coming together to share sweets and fireworks, reinforcing bonds and cultural heritage.
