On December 26, 2024, Tunisia announced its National Strategy for the development of green hydrogen, aiming to tackle the country's significant energy deficit, which constitutes over 60% of its overall trade deficit.

The strategy outlines ambitious targets, planning to export approximately 6.3 million tons of hydrogen annually by 2050 to the European Union via pipeline, while supplying the local market with around 2 million tons in various forms, including green ammonia, green methanol, and synthetic fuels.

By 2030, Tunisia aims to export targeted hydrogen quantities to Europe, contributing 300,000 tons in 2030 and 1.6 million tons in 2040 to the EU's hydrogen supply through the "North Africa & Southern Europe Corridor," which is expected to reach 3 million tons by 2030 and 10 million tons by 2040, according to studies on the European Hydrogen Backbone.

The projected annual positive impact on Tunisia's trade balance is estimated at about €2.1 billion by 2035 and €8.6 billion by 2050, largely achieved through gaseous hydrogen transported via the European hydrogen corridor to EU buyers.
