European Space Agency Launches Hera Mission to Protect Earth from Asteroids

10:39, 09 十月

The European Space Agency (ESA) has successfully launched its Hera mission into space on October 9, 2024, aimed at planetary defense against potential asteroid impacts that could threaten Earth. The mission is crucial in preventing disasters similar to the one that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs millions of years ago.

Hera was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and is set for a year-long journey to the Dimorphos asteroid, which is the only celestial body where human activity has successfully altered its orbit. This mission follows NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) conducted in 2022, which successfully impacted Dimorphos to change its trajectory.

The Hera spacecraft will gather data to enhance our understanding of how to protect Earth from future asteroid threats. The mission's objective is to analyze the effects of DART's collision and to refine the kinetic impactor technique, which involves redirecting asteroids by crashing a spacecraft into them.

ESA collaborates with various space agencies to monitor Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) that could pose risks to our planet. This initiative is vital for developing effective early warning systems and strategies to safeguard humanity from catastrophic asteroid impacts.

The Hera mission represents a significant step forward in planetary defense, with hopes that by 2030, more reliable methods for protecting Earth will be established, ensuring that humanity does not face a fate similar to that of the dinosaurs.
