Argentina and China Strengthen Economic Ties Amidst Mexican President's Warning to Trump

On November 26, 2024, the Argentine Presidency emphasized the commercial aspects of its dialogue with China. The Chinese representatives highlighted the importance of maintaining 'achievements' and focusing on the 'future' to promote a 'sustainable and stable development' of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between China and Argentina for mutual benefit.

China expressed interest in increasing trade with Argentina, which aims to enhance its exports to the Chinese market, where it currently has a significant deficit. Both nations agreed to continue strengthening their commercial ties and developing joint projects beneficial to both economies. During the meeting, existing commercial and financial agreements were reaffirmed, alongside a commitment to explore new opportunities to enhance bilateral relations, according to Argentine spokesperson Manuel Adorni.

In a separate development on the same day, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed incoming U.S. President Donald Trump's threat of imposing new tariffs on Mexican imports. Sheinbaum warned that such tariffs would not resolve issues related to irregular migration or drug consumption in the United States.

Sheinbaum read a letter during her press conference, emphasizing the need for 'cooperation and mutual understanding' to tackle these challenges. She criticized Trump's proposal to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, stating that it would force Mexico to retaliate, potentially jeopardizing joint business ventures, particularly in the automotive sector involving companies like General Motors, Stellantis, and Ford.

She concluded that such tariffs would lead to inflation and job losses in both countries, urging for a more collaborative approach to address the issues at hand.
