Bolivia Faces Political Tensions as Morales Leads March for 2025 Candidacy

On September 19, 2024, former Bolivian President Evo Morales began a march advocating for his candidacy in the upcoming 2025 elections, despite previously announcing his withdrawal to avoid potential government backlash. The march, which started on September 17 from Caracollo in the Oruro region, aims to reach La Paz by September 23.

Morales, who led the Movement for Socialism (MAS), stated that the protest seeks to address critical issues such as the shortage of dollars and fuel, as well as rising prices of basic goods. Supporters argue that the march is essential for the 'salvation of the homeland' and demand respect for resolutions from a congress last year that endorsed Morales's candidacy.

The Bolivian government, led by President Luis Arce, views the mobilization as a potential coup attempt, suggesting that it aims to pave the way for the Senate president, Andrónico Rodríguez, to assume power and facilitate Morales's candidacy. Tensions between Morales and Arce have escalated since late 2021, primarily due to disagreements over state administration and internal party leadership.

The situation in Bolivia reflects broader political instability, with implications for the country’s governance and its political landscape as factions within MAS struggle for control.
