Andrew Garfield Reflects on Life and Love at San Sebastián Film Festival with 'We Live in Time' - September 30, 2024

Actor Andrew Garfield, renowned for his role in the Spider-Man franchise, closed the San Sebastián Film Festival on Saturday with his latest film, We Live in Time. The poignant love story, directed by John Crowley, explores themes of life and death, prompting Garfield to reflect deeply on existence.

During a press conference, Garfield shared, "There’s only one way to reach the light, and it’s through the darkness." The Oscar-nominated actor emphasized the challenges of living fully, stating, "There must be loss, suffering, courage, rejection, and death; we can only rise to the heights by going deep."

Co-starring Florence Pugh, the film tells the story of a couple facing a life-altering diagnosis. Pugh was unable to attend the festival due to filming commitments in New Zealand, but Garfield humorously noted her love for the event and the city.

Garfield, who lost his mother in 2021, found personal resonance in the script, stating, "It felt like I had written it myself." While the film is a romance, Crowley aims for a more profound narrative about life and death. He remarked that the chemistry between Garfield and Pugh is a beautiful side effect of the story.

Set to release in Spanish cinemas on January 3, We Live in Time concludes the 72nd San Sebastián Film Festival, which will announce its awards tonight.
