Tropical Storm Usagi Approaches Luzon, Philippines - November 12, 2024

Tropical Storm Usagi is projected to make landfall near Luzon, Philippines, within the next 48 hours, as the region braces for severe weather conditions.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued warnings indicating that Usagi's winds have intensified to 85 kilometers per hour (53 miles per hour). Residents in northern Luzon are advised to prepare for heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential storm surges.

This storm follows Typhoon Toraji, which recently caused evacuations of over 32,000 individuals in vulnerable areas. Although Toraji caused minimal damage and no fatalities, its impact was felt as it moved out to sea.

In the wake of these storms, utility workers are engaged in restoring power and clearing debris caused by landslides and fallen trees. Despite the lack of casualties reported from Toraji, about 15,000 evacuees remain in shelters. The government continues to monitor Usagi's trajectory, with expectations of its intensification.

Historically, the Philippines faces around 20 significant storms annually, often leading to loss of life and economic hardship. Recent studies indicate a concerning trend of storms forming closer to coastlines, intensifying rapidly, and persisting longer due to climate change.
