Transforming Waste into Green Space: Bengaluru's Urban Forest Initiative

03:12, 27 十二月

编辑者: Natalia Z.

In a remarkable environmental initiative, a degraded hillock in East Bengaluru is being transformed into a vibrant green space, thanks to a project launched by the environmental organization SayTrees in October 2023. This 5.2-acre wasteland, previously covered in plastic waste, is set to become a dense forest that will restore ecological balance and enhance community well-being.

Karnataka faces a significant waste management challenge, generating around 11,085 tonnes of solid waste daily, much of which ends up in 191 unmanaged dumpsites across the state. The Cheemasandra site, once a dumping ground, is now a beacon of hope, showcasing innovative techniques such as the Modified Miyawaki method, which promotes rapid afforestation through dense planting of native species.

Over 44,500 saplings have already been planted, making this one of Bengaluru's largest urban forest initiatives. Deokant Payasi, CEO of SayTrees, emphasized the project's multifaceted benefits: “We are creating not just a forest but a space that will provide cleaner air, reduce urban heat, and support biodiversity.”

The project addresses years of neglect that left the soil barren and laden with non-biodegradable materials. By employing innovative soil enrichment techniques and engaging local communities, the initiative aims to create a self-sustaining and biodiverse environment.

As Payasi noted, “Through such initiatives, we are combating climate change by enhancing carbon sequestration, promoting biodiversity, and improving community health.” The reclamation of sites like Cheemasandra is part of a larger movement to tackle the waste management crisis, offering a replicable model for urban areas worldwide.
