In the historic nave of Winchester Cathedral, a unique art installation by Tessa Campbell Fraser is on display until February 26, 2025. Sperm whales are among the most mysterious creatures on Earth. They communicate through complex sound "codes", reflecting their social bonds, memory, and even culture. This installation brings this phenomenon to life: whale vocalizations are transmitted through special speakers, causing painted banners to vibrate in sync with the whales' clicks, as if materializing the language of the ocean.
Environmental Message: Protecting Marine Life
The sculptures are partially made from discarded fishing nets and gear—known as "ghost gear", one of the greatest threats to marine creatures. This serves as a powerful reminder that our oceans need protection and that art can be a bridge to deeper awareness of their fragility.
Future Research: Understanding the Language of Whales
Alongside this exhibition, a groundbreaking scientific project is using artificial intelligence to decode sperm whale vocalizations. This research could lead to a greater understanding of whale culture and possibly even cross-species communication, bringing us closer to a new level of connection with nature.

In addition to the exhibition, on February 6, a special lecture titled "Echolocations" will bring together scientists and artists to discuss the impact of human-generated noise pollution on marine life and explore ways for humans and oceans to coexist in harmony.
