Meta Platforms is developing a search engine designed to provide conversational answers about current events, aiming to reduce dependence on Google Search and Microsoft Bing. The project is led by Meta AI Senior Engineering Manager Xueyuan Su.
According to sources, the search engine will focus on news, sports, and stock information. Saul Marquez, CEO of Outcomes Rocket, noted that Meta's initiative parallels Microsoft's integration of OpenAI data into Bing, which transformed user search experiences.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently stated that Meta AI has nearly 500 million monthly active users, positioning it as a leading AI assistant globally. The company has been indexing the web for eight months to enhance its AI capabilities.
In a move to bolster its news offerings, Meta announced last week that its AI chatbot will utilize content from Reuters to answer real-time user inquiries about news and events. The financial details of this multi-year partnership remain undisclosed.
Earlier this year, Meta launched Meta AI, built on Llama 3, which is now accessible across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger.
