Why Slovenia?

After a hectic few months at work, followed by the festive season, my fiancé and I craved a "wellness break." Our research led us to Slovenia, a place often overlooked in favor of more popular destinations. Nestled between Italy, Austria, and Croatia, Slovenia is a hidden gem that offers stunning landscapes and rich cultural experiences.

Exploring Lake Bohinj

We chose to stay at Lake Bohinj, Slovenia's largest natural lake, located in Triglav National Park. Surrounded by the Julian Alps, its crystal-clear waters and serene setting provided the perfect backdrop for relaxation and adventure. We spent four nights here, soaking in the tranquillity.

Activities on Offer:

  • Hiking: The 12-kilometre perimeter trail around the lake offers breathtaking views of mountains and forests.

  • Savica Waterfall: A short hike leads to this spectacular waterfall, the source of the Sava River.

  • Triglav National Park: Renowned for its alpine meadows and dramatic landscapes, it's a hiker's paradise.

  • Paddleboarding and Kayaking: While not available in winter, locals recommend these activities from spring onwards.

  • Mount Vogel Cable Car: Offers stunning views and access to skiing or hiking, depending on the season.

Where to Stay: Hotel Bohinj

Hotel Bohinj caught my eye with its striking design and focus on sustainability. This eco-friendly retreat blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Highlights included the serene lakeside location, a large outdoor fire pit, and delightful meals paired with Slovenian wines.

Discovering Ljubljana

Our next stop was Ljubljana, Slovenia's enchanting capital. This city is steeped in history and brimming with modern energy. Locals proudly shared how it has transformed in recent years, showcasing the beauty and culture of their country.

Highlights from Ljubljana:

  • Ljubljana Castle: Offers panoramic views of the city.

  • Old Town Stroll: Cobbled streets lined with colorful architecture.

  • Tivoli Park: A perfect spot for leisurely walks or bike rides.

  • River Cruise: A private boat tour on the Ljubljanica River provided serene views and insider tips.

Where to Stay: Zlata Ladjica Boutique Hotel

This intimate boutique hotel blends old-world charm with modern luxury. Its attentive service and lavish breakfasts made for a memorable stay.

Where to Eat in Ljubljana

  • Gostilna 5-6kg: Hearty Slovenian cuisine in a cozy setting.

  • Picaboj: For the best pizza in the city.

  • Cantina: A vibrant fusion of Mediterranean flavors.

  • Hiša Pod Gradom: A mix of Slovenian classics and European-inspired dishes.

  • Le Petit Cafe: The perfect brunch spot with a French-inspired menu.

Final Thoughts

Slovenia surprised us in the best way. Its unspoiled landscapes, buzzing capital, and the warm hospitality of its people left a lasting impression. As one local told us, in the summer, Slovenia is the only place in Europe where you can ski in the morning and sunbathe by the sea that afternoon.

This small yet beautiful country packs a real punch, deserving a spot on everyone's travel list.
