Furry Fridays: How Dogs Bring Joy to the Workplace

In a delightful initiative, Richland County Prosecutor Jodie Schumacher has introduced Furry Fridays at her office. This allows staff members to bring their dogs to work, creating a cheerful environment amidst the serious nature of their jobs.

The idea came from receptionist Cheryl Kaple, inspired by a friend's workplace. Schumacher believes that having dogs around is a great stress reliever. "Animals give immediate affection to you. Dogs don't want anything in return; they just give," she explains.

Research supports this, showing that dogs can reduce stress and anxiety, boost moods, and alleviate feelings of loneliness.

To keep things professional, only one dog is allowed per Friday, and staff members sign up for the chance to bring their furry friends. Last Friday, Kaple brought her Newfoundland, Mo, who is known for his laid-back demeanor and love for belly rubs. Mo's presence brightens everyone's day.

Alongside Mo was Travis, a 15-year-old dachshund owned by Elaine Hutton. Travis, who recently moved from Atlanta, enjoys playing with larger dogs like Mo.

Schumacher herself has three dogs: Vader, Maggie, and Ollie, all of whom have visited the office. Vader struts around confidently, while Maggie is more reserved. Ollie is particularly fascinated by the spacious office.

Moreover, therapy dogs have even been used in trials to support vulnerable witnesses. The dogs at the prosecutor's office provide a unique form of therapy, making the workplace a little brighter and helping employees manage their stress.

As Schumacher says, "As soon as they hear those footsteps going down the hallway, they just smile." It's clear that these furry friends make a positive impact on the workplace.
