Galp Energia to Launch Biodiesel and Biojet Fuel Production by 2026 in Portugal

Edited by: Alla illuny

Lisbon, Dec 19 - Galp Energia, a leading oil producer and refiner in Portugal, announced plans to begin industrial-scale production of biodiesel and biojet fuel from waste materials at its Sines refinery by 2026. This initiative is part of a joint venture with Japan's Mitsui, which involves an investment of 400 million euros ($415 million) in a Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) plant.

The HVO facility is expected to have a production capacity of 270,000 metric tons per year, converting waste such as used cooking oils into renewable fuels. The process will utilize green hydrogen generated by an electrolyser powered by renewable energy sources, including wind and solar.

Galp confirmed the arrival of three reactors necessary for biofuel processing, which will enable the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and biodiesel starting in 2026. This development positions Galp as a key player in advancing low-carbon energy solutions.

Additionally, Galp is investing 250 million euros in a 100 megawatt (MW) electrolyser unit to support hydrogen production for the Sines refinery.
