AI Technology Aids Retailers in Combatting Shoplifting

WINTERS - Retailers in California are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to combat shoplifting, which costs them significant losses annually.

At Winters Market, the AI system Veesion analyzes live video streams to detect gestures associated with theft, alerting staff with video evidence when it identifies suspicious behavior.

"People are actually surprised with the tech we use because they don't expect us to accurately detect something like this," said Sukhdeep Kaur, a store representative.

Veesion operates as a subscription service, integrating with existing surveillance systems and providing around-the-clock monitoring without the need for constant human oversight. Hiren Mowji, head of business development for Veesion, noted that demand for such technology is particularly strong among smaller retailers.

"You can't have staff actively watching the screen monitoring cameras all day long; it's just not cost-effective," Mowji explained. As retailers continue to face challenges from theft, AI solutions like Veesion are becoming essential tools in loss prevention.
