Colombian Navy Rescues Endangered Olive Ridley Turtle from Abandoned Fishing Net

In a remarkable conservation effort, divers from the Colombian Navy rescued an Olive Ridley turtle trapped in an abandoned fishing net off Gorgona Island, located 16 hours from Buenaventura's maritime port. The rescue occurred during a cleanup initiative aimed at removing debris from the ocean.

While retrieving fishing nets ensnared in coral reefs, the divers stumbled upon the turtle, which they named 'Salvada.' The turtle was found alive after being trapped for an extended period, suffering from lacerations and stress. The rescue team provided immediate medical attention, applying special medications to treat its wounds.

After a thorough examination by officials from Parques Nacionales de Colombia, the turtle was tagged for monitoring and released back into the waters near Gorgona Island. This rescue highlights the ongoing challenges faced by marine life due to pollution and abandoned fishing gear.

The Colombian Navy emphasized its commitment to environmental protection and plans to continue such initiatives in collaboration with national parks and other organizations.
