On January 9, 2025, Turkey and Qatar dispatched two power generation ships to Syria to enhance electricity supply after the United States eased sanctions following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime. Over 13 years of civil war have severely damaged Syrian infrastructure, including power plants and energy pipelines, leading to power outages lasting more than 20 hours a day.
Khaled Abu Dayy, head of the national electricity company, announced to the state news agency SANA that the two ships are en route to Syria. He stated, 'They will generate 800 megawatts, which is equivalent to half of the current production.' Work is underway to secure the power lines that will transport electricity from the ships' docking points, although the specific locations have not been disclosed.
