BMW and Tata Technologies Launch Joint Venture for Next-Gen EV Software Development

BMW Group has partnered with Tata Technologies to establish a 50:50 joint venture aimed at developing software for its next-generation electric vehicles (EVs). The collaboration includes the opening of an IT development hub in India, with locations in Bangalore, Pune, and Chennai.

The joint venture is projected to employ around 1,000 people within a few years and is anticipated to generate over $100 million in revenue shortly after operations commence.

One of the initial projects involves creating software for BMW's Neue Klasse, which will feature the new iDrive X infotainment system. The first models, including the iX3 and the i3 sedan, are set to launch starting in 2025.

Significantly, the iDrive X system will eliminate the traditional rotary knob, favoring a larger touchscreen and a dashboard-wide head-up display known as Panoramic Vision. This shift reflects BMW's commitment to minimalistic design and advanced technology integration in its upcoming models.

Production of Neue Klasse vehicles will occur in multiple locations, including Hungary, Germany, and Mexico, with plans to begin manufacturing in China by 2026.
