A team of scientists led by Professor Rupert Thornton from the University of Arizona has made a remarkable discovery: an ancient underground cave system in the Rocky Mountains, dating back over 300 million years. The expedition lasted 14 months, with findings published in the journal Geological Review.

The newly discovered cave system, named the "Crystal Labyrinth," astonished researchers with its abundance of quartz formations, which are rare in such structures. The system extends over 45 kilometers, with a maximum depth of 312 meters.

"We encountered an unprecedented case of preservation of ancient geological structures. These caves formed during a time when the region was submerged under an ancient ocean," explained Thornton.

Using advanced 3D mapping and spectral analysis techniques, researchers examined fossils of marine organisms and mineral deposits. These findings provide valuable information about climatic conditions millions of years ago. Unique crystalline formations, which have no known analogs elsewhere on the planet, sparked particular interest.

"Each new corridor presents surprises. This discovery could rewrite our understanding of the geological history of the region," emphasized Thornton.

The scientists plan to continue their study of the cave system, focusing on paleoclimatic analysis. Their ongoing work promises to unveil even more secrets of the ancient world.
