Apple to Launch iOS 18.1 with Hearing Health Features on October 29

Apple will release iOS 18.1 on October 29, introducing advanced hearing health features for AirPods Pro 2. Users can perform a clinically validated hearing test via their iPhone, allowing the AirPods to function as over-the-counter hearing aids if necessary.

The hearing test plays tones and prompts users for responses, similar to a clinical setting. Results will be stored in the Health app, enabling users to adjust audio settings based on their hearing needs.

If hearing loss is detected, the AirPods Pro 2 will automatically amplify specific sounds in real time, enhancing speech and environmental sounds as needed, according to Dr. Sumbul Desai, Apple's VP of Health.

The update will also introduce new hearing protection features, including automatic loud sound reduction. Additional enhancements include Apple Intelligence features, such as writing tools, notification summaries, and smart replies.

Other updates include an object removal tool, automatic movie creation in the Photos app, a revamped Siri interface, new call recording and transcription capabilities, expanded NFC access for third-party developers, and improved camera controls for iPhone 16 users.
