UAE Sizzles in Hottest May on Record: 51.6°C Sparks Heatwave Concerns

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

The United Arab Emirates experienced its hottest May on record in 2025, with the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) reporting peak daily temperatures averaging over 40°C. The mercury soared to a scorching 51.6°C in Sweihan on May 24, following a record of 50.4°C the previous day.

This surpassed the previous May record of 50.2°C set in 2009. The average maximum temperature for May was 40.4°C, exceeding the historical average of 39.2°C. Scientists attribute the heatwave to winds from the desert and the broader impacts of climate change.

Dr. Diana Francis, an assistant professor at Khalifa University, noted that warm seasons are expected to become longer. While El Nino concluded in 2024, its effects led to less rainfall and increased heat in the region. The NCM issued a heat warning, advising residents to take precautions against sun exposure and stay hydrated.
