Landslide in North Sikkim Strands Tourists, Army Leads Rescue

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

A massive landslide in North Sikkim has left 113 tourists stranded, prompting a large-scale rescue operation led by the Indian Army. The remote Lachen village was completely cut off, requiring the army to reach it on foot. Thirty of the stranded tourists, including foreign nationals, were airlifted on June 3rd.

Army teams are using specialized equipment to navigate unstable, high-altitude terrain. They are continuing their search for six missing individuals. Despite challenging conditions, the army remains committed to the rescue effort.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is also working to restore connectivity in the region. They are clearing debris and reopening critical lifelines in affected areas. Incessant rains across Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Eastern Bhutan have triggered landslides and road blockages.

The government of Mizoram has issued an advisory postponing visits due to severe weather. Heavy rainfall has caused landslides, mudslides, flash floods, and rockfalls in the state.
