Magnitude 5.4 Earthquake Strikes South Sandwich Islands

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. The archipelago, a British Overseas Territory, is located in the southern Atlantic Ocean.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the epicenter at a depth of 37.5 kilometers, approximately 100 kilometers southeast of South Georgia Island. There have been no reports of damage or injuries following the seismic event.

The South Sandwich Islands are known for their frequent seismic and volcanic activity. This is due to their location at the intersection of the South American and Antarctic tectonic plates. No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake.
