From Circus to Sanctuary: Lionesses Tomoyo and Illiana Find Forever Home in South Africa After Years of Captivity

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

Two lionesses, Tomoyo and Illiana, have been relocated from a circus near Paris to the LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa. After years of being confined in a circus wagon, the lionesses were transported by FOUR PAWS to their new enclosure. Born in captivity, Tomoyo and Illiana were forced to perform for years and later spent time in winter quarters with limited exercise, leading to them being overweight. Following their owner's voluntary surrender in December 2024 due to upcoming French legislation banning wild animal performances in circuses, they were temporarily housed at Tonga Terre d'Accueil refuge. A third lioness, Pepsi, sadly passed away shortly after due to kidney failure. Tomoyo and Illiana are now in good health, having already begun to lose weight and build muscle. At LIONSROCK, they will be closely monitored and receive specialized care to help them adjust to their new environment, which includes climbing structures and enrichment activities.
