Florida Veterans Find Healing With Rescued Animals

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

In Naples, Florida, a unique partnership is offering solace to veterans. The Shy Wolf Sanctuary, located in Golden Gate Estates, is providing a haven for both rescued animals and those who served.

The sanctuary has teamed up with Home Base, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting veterans dealing with the unseen scars of war. This collaboration has birthed the "Healing Hearts" program, fostering community and connection through animal-assisted support.

The sanctuary is home to over 40 animals, including wolves, foxes, and even a cougar, many of whom have been rescued from difficult pasts. These animals, often victims of abuse or abandonment, share a unique bond with the veterans.

Navy veteran Karen Maher shared her experience, emphasizing the profound impact of the program. The shared experiences and the opportunity to care for rescued animals offer a new sense of peace and purpose.

The veterans participate in group projects, further strengthening their bonds. The sanctuary's animals, unable to return to the wild, find a safe and loving environment, mirroring the healing journey of the veterans.

Cindy Connelly, who helps lead the Healing Hearts program, highlights the animals' daily care and enrichment. The program offers a perfect life for the animals and a path to healing for the veterans.
