Surge in Pet Abandonment in UK Amid Cost of Living Crisis

The RSPCA has reported a staggering 51% increase in animal abandonment cases across England and Wales over the past three years, with a notable rise during the winter months.

In 2023, Buckinghamshire alone recorded 189 abandonment reports, up from 166 in 2021. The total number of abandonment reports during the winter period jumped from 3,071 in 2021 to 4,630 in 2023.

This alarming trend is attributed to a surge in pet ownership during the COVID-19 lockdown and the financial pressures many families are facing due to rising living costs.

Ian Briggs, chief inspector at the RSPCA, highlighted the distressing situation: “We are seeing a shocking rise in the number of calls reporting pet abandonment to our emergency line. Sadly, we expect this trend to continue as more pet owners face financial hardship.”

The charity has witnessed heartbreaking cases, including sick animals left to suffer alone. A recent case involved two cats, Dragonfly and Butterfly, abandoned in pet carriers in Aylesbury. Fortunately, both cats have since been rehomed.

Briggs emphasized the ongoing need for public support: “As long as animals are in desperate need this Christmas, we won't stop. Please join the Christmas Rescue and help bring joy and safety to animals.”
