Edited by: Uliana S.

The Onda City Council, through its Onda Adopta initiative, has made significant strides in 2024, establishing itself as a key program for animal protection and welfare in the municipality. Last year, the program facilitated the adoption of 44 pets, providing them with new homes, and helped return 48 lost animals to their owners.

Driven by the Department of Healthy City and Natural Spaces, led by Paco Pastor, the initiative maintains its commitment to zero euthanasia, raising awareness about responsible pet care. In total, the service managed 92 cases of adoptions and returns, reflecting the community's trust in the program.

Among the adopted animals are mainly dogs and cats, but other species, such as birds, were also rescued and offered for adoption. This highlights the program's broad impact and the diversity of species served, which interested individuals can explore on the website.

Paco Pastor emphasized, “We are pleased with this year's results, but we want to continue stressing the importance of responsible adoption and preventing abandonment, which should never be an option.” He added, “We will keep working to ensure zero euthanasia and animal welfare in Onda.”

In 2024, Onda City Council continued its collaboration with the Segunda Oportunidad shelter, solidifying its essential role in managing and caring for abandoned animals in the municipality. Throughout the year, the shelter attended to 15 dogs and 45 cats, reflecting its commitment to animal welfare and zero euthanasia.

Additionally, 40 veterinary services were managed, including cases of injured animals, reports from citizens, and situations referred by the Local Police. This service has been crucial in ensuring prompt and effective care for animals in emergency situations.

In terms of awareness, the shelter participated in activities organized by the council, such as the Fireta Solidària, the Fira del Llibre, and workshops in educational centers like public schools and IES Serra d'Espadà, reinforcing education in values of respect for animals.

Furthermore, progress has been made in controlling feral cat colonies, with the establishment of 18 identified colonies and the issuance of permits for caretakers, an important step for the sustainable management of these populations in Onda.
