Ecuador Holds Presidential Election Amidst Gang Violence Crisis

Ecuador held presidential elections on Sunday, February 9th, 2025, with incumbent President Daniel Noboa seeking reelection. The election comes amidst a severe crisis of gang violence, a key issue for voters. Noboa faces socialist challenger Luisa González and fifteen other candidates. Voting took place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time.

Ecuadorians cast their ballots in a bid to address the country's economic crisis and rampant violence fueled by drug cartels. The election was held under heightened security measures following the assassination of a presidential candidate in 2023. Campaigns focused on tackling the violence, which has reached a staggering rate of 38 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.

If no candidate secures a majority of the vote, a second round of voting will be held on April 13th.
