Japan Raises Concerns Over China's Military Activities Amid Growing Tensions

Tensions between Beijing and Tokyo have escalated in recent years due to China's expanding military presence in the region. On October 9, 2024, Japan's new Foreign Minister, Takeshi Iwaya, expressed serious concerns to his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, regarding China's increasing military activities, including recent 'violations' of Japanese airspace.

Iwaya conveyed his apprehensions during a phone call, highlighting the situation in the South China Sea and China's military maneuvers. He specifically mentioned incidents such as the violation of Japanese airspace by Chinese military aircraft in August and the passage of a Chinese aircraft carrier near Japanese territorial waters in September. Iwaya requested a full explanation regarding the airspace violations.

The growing tensions have coincided with Japan strengthening its security ties with the United States. Additionally, a Chinese intercontinental ballistic missile launch into the Pacific Ocean in September sparked protests from Japan.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang expressed hope for a 'new atmosphere' and 'new progress' in China-Japan relations during the call, as reported by state television CCTV.
