South Africa Plans Climate Council Amid Severe Weather Crisis

On October 5, 2024, South Africa's Premier Ntuli announced plans to establish a climate advisory council within four weeks, in response to a series of devastating weather events that have resulted in loss of life and widespread displacement in the province.

Desmond D'Sa, coordinator of the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA), urged collaboration with all stakeholders to develop effective solutions to the climate crisis. He emphasized the importance of including diverse voices in the formation of the council, stating, 'We have been fighting this battle for 30 years. We are ready to work with the premier to find the much-needed solutions to climate change,' highlighting the urgent need for action beyond mere discussions.
