Chanel Appoints Matthieu Blazy as New Creative Director Amid Luxury Industry Challenges

Chanel has appointed Matthieu Blazy, the former creative director of Bottega Veneta, as its new artistic director, marking a significant shift in the brand's aesthetic. This decision comes after the departure of Virginie Viard, who left the company in June 2024 after nearly three decades of service, including a close collaboration with the late Karl Lagerfeld.

Blazy's appointment is seen as a response to the current challenges facing the luxury fashion market, which has experienced a downturn. Chanel, the second-largest luxury brand globally, reported a 16% increase in sales last year, reaching nearly $20 billion. The brand aims to capitalize on Blazy's innovative approach to design, which is expected to rejuvenate its offerings.

In a statement, Chanel executives praised Blazy as one of the most talented designers of his generation, highlighting his bold personality and commitment to craftsmanship. He will be responsible for creating ten collections annually, including haute couture and accessories, with his first collection debuting at Paris Fashion Week in October 2025.

Meanwhile, Kering has appointed Louise Trotter as the new creative director of Bottega Veneta, taking over from Blazy. Trotter, previously at Carven and Lacoste, is expected to bring her own vision to the Italian brand.
