A Groundbreaking Project to Reduce Underwater Noise Pollution

Editado por: Inna Horoshkina One

An inspiring EU-funded project worth 86 million NOK is bringing together five vessels, including the renowned Roald Amundsen expedition ship from HX Hurtigruten Expeditions, to test cutting-edge technologies aimed at reducing underwater noise pollution. Led by Maritime Cleantech, this initiative seeks to minimize the impact of vessel noise on marine ecosystems.

The Challenge: Underwater Noise and Its Effects

Noise pollution from ships disrupts critical behaviors of marine species, affecting their ability to reproduce, navigate, and communicate. In response to these concerns, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) approved new guidelines in 2023 to reduce underwater noise from maritime operations and is currently developing an action plan for effective implementation.

The EU Project: A Step Towards Quieter Seas

This initiative will evaluate industry standards and regulations to further mitigate underwater noise. Norway, a leader in green maritime solutions, sees this collaboration with the EU as an exciting opportunity for its companies while reinforcing Norwegian expertise in the global maritime industry, according to Minister of Environment Andreas Bjelland Eriksen.

Key Norwegian partners in the project include Kongsberg Maritime, Bergen Engines, and Sintef Ocean, working together to create quieter and more eco-friendly ships, promising a brighter future for our oceans.
