ESA's RISE Mission Set to Launch in 2028, Pioneering In-Orbit Servicing for Satellite Sustainability

The European Space Agency (ESA) is advancing its sustainability efforts in space with the upcoming launch of its first in-orbit servicing mission, RISE, planned for 2028. This initiative is part of ESA's Zero Debris approach, aiming to minimize space debris and promote a circular economy in space by ensuring safe operations and disposal of satellites by 2030.

RISE will demonstrate the capability to rendezvous and dock with geostationary satellites in need of attitude and orbit control, thereby extending their operational life. The mission's prime contractor, D-Orbit, will commence commercial life extension services following a successful demonstration of performance standards.

By enhancing in-orbit services such as refueling and refurbishment, RISE represents a significant step toward sustainable satellite operations, addressing the growing concern of space debris and the need for responsible spaceflight practices.
