The dolphins formerly residing at the Zoo de Madrid have been relocated to a park in Hainan, China, following external pressure and recommendations from the European Association for Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). The move aims to ensure the highest technological standards and keep the dolphin group together.

According to a statement from Zoo de Madrid, the dolphins arrived in perfect condition, accompanied by their caretakers. The Chinese park boasts modern facilities and advanced technology, already housing dolphins from other European institutions.

The dolphins' well-being at the Madrid zoo has been a subject of controversy. In 2019, animal rights organizations reported that some dolphins appeared ill with skin lesions, and others showed signs of vision problems. An investigation by Guardia Civil's animal protection unit and Madrid's regional government found no irregularities, and Zoo de Madrid was not penalized.

Despite the previous findings, the decision to relocate the dolphins has been hailed as a victory by animal rights organizations. Some groups, like the Great Ape Project, are advocating for the complete closure of Zoo de Madrid's aquarium, emphasizing that dolphins are intelligent beings.
