Germany's Chancellor Calls for Ceasefire in Gaza as Anniversary of Hamas Attack Approaches

On October 6, 2024, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated his call for a ceasefire in Gaza, coinciding with the upcoming anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel that occurred on October 7, 2023. The attack resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of approximately 250 individuals.

Scholz emphasized that Germany would not tolerate antisemitism or blind hatred against Israel, expressing solidarity with the Jewish community in Germany. He stated, “We will never tolerate antisemitism and blind hatred toward Israel,” and highlighted the necessity of protecting the civilian population in Gaza.

In his message, Scholz urged for a definitive ceasefire to allow for humanitarian aid and the release of Israeli hostages. He also noted the ongoing risk of a larger conflict in the region, which affects Germany due to its migrant populations with ties to Israel and Gaza.

On the same day, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock described the October 7 attack as a significant rupture for Jews and Germany, reiterating Israel’s right to self-defense. She condemned the increase in antisemitic incidents in Germany, which have surged since the attacks.

Since October 7, nearly 42,000 people have reportedly died in Gaza due to Israeli military actions, with 100,000 injured, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The conflict has also led to severe humanitarian crises, including widespread famine as reported by the United Nations.

As tensions continue, demonstrations have taken place in Berlin, with around 1,800 people participating in a pro-Palestinian rally and 650 showing solidarity with Israel. Scholz's statements reflect Germany's commitment to combatting antisemitism and supporting Israel's right to defend itself.
