India Extends IT Imports Control

The Indian government is set to extend its import management system for IT hardware products, including laptops and tablets, for an additional three months.

Current imports are valued at $8.4 billion, slightly below the authorized $9.5 billion, predominantly sourced from China.

In August, restrictions were placed on various IT products, requiring licenses for imports. The initiative, launched last year, aims to monitor shipments without disrupting market supply.

Importers can apply for multiple licenses valid until September 30, 2024. On November 1, 2023, over 100 applications, including those from Apple, Dell, and Lenovo, for nearly $10 billion worth of IT products were approved.

The new licensing regime encompasses laptops, personal computers, microcomputers, and mainframe systems, reinforcing India's trusted supply chain.

In the previous fiscal year, India imported personal computers worth $5.33 billion, down from $7.37 billion the year before.
