Music played a significant role in the nominations for the 97th annual Academy Awards, announced on January 23. Two musicals, Emilia Pérez and Wicked, are among the 10 films nominated for best picture, marking the first time since 1969 that two musicals have been nominated in this category in the same year.
Emilia Pérez received 13 nominations, more than any other film this year, while Wicked garnered 10. This is the first time in 60 years that two musicals have received 10 or more nominations in the same year. The Oscar telecast is set for March 2.
In the music categories, Diane Warren is nominated for best original song for the eighth year in a row, tying her with Sammy Cahn for the longest continuous streak of nominations in this category's history. Clément Ducol and Camille are nominated for best original score for Emilia Pérez and have two songs in the running for best original song, making them the first composers to land three nods in music categories in one year since Justin Hurwitz with La La Land in 2017.
Other notable nominations include John Legend and Brandi Carlile for their song "Never Too Late" from the documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, and Hildur Guðnadóttir for her score to Conclave, which is vying to become the quickest return to the podium in this category since Gustavo Santaolalla won back-to-back Oscars in 2006-07.
The 97th Academy Awards ceremony promises to be a celebration of music, with a diverse range of nominees representing various genres and styles. The awards will be presented on March 2.
