On December 6, 2024, Jakarta's provincial government announced plans to implement weather modification techniques through the end of the year. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), aims to mitigate the anticipated high rainfall, which could lead to significant flooding.

Acting Governor Teguh Setyabudi stated that discussions regarding this initiative also involved the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). Conversations included the allocation of unexpected expenditure funds for weather modification efforts.

"Weather modification will be carried out from mid to late this year. We are coordinating with BNPB and BMKG on this matter, particularly concerning the use of unexpected expenditure funds," he said.

Due to the use of contingency funds, a declaration of emergency status is necessary. Teguh emphasized the need for ongoing coordination regarding the weather modification plans.

To further combat potential flooding, the Jakarta provincial government is preparing appropriate infrastructure. They have conducted disaster preparedness drills to ensure that flood response mechanisms are fully operational.

Teguh noted that if Jakarta experiences continuous rainfall for ten days, the soil saturation could impede water flow. He highlighted the importance of proactive measures, stating that the existing infrastructure has been readied for the rainy season.

Jakarta's provincial government has mobilized relevant regional organizations, such as the Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Social Services, Health Services, and others, to collaborate in responding to flood-related disasters.

Previously, BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati warned of the potential for a repeat of the severe flooding experienced in 2020. The BPBD has outlined strategies to anticipate hydrometeorological disasters.

Kristian Gottam Sihombing from BPBD Jakarta noted that this year's flood management strategies differ from previous years. The agency has enhanced the capacity of water pumps and expanded drainage networks in flood-prone areas.

Additionally, real-time weather monitoring technology is being utilized to improve early detection and response times. The provincial government is also revitalizing rivers, dredging waterways, and increasing pump capacities to strengthen flood control infrastructure. Community education on disaster preparedness and evacuation simulations are also being conducted.
