Understanding Cat Purring: A Lifelong Communication Tool

03:20, 23 gennaio

Modificato da: Olga Samsonova

Unlike other felines, domestic cats purr throughout their lives. This intriguing behavior serves as a communication mechanism benefiting both the cat and humans.

When arriving home from work, it’s a comforting sight to see our feline friends curl up on our laps, emitting that organic, vibrating sound. The purring is primarily a way for cats to express their affection. In both wild and domestic felids, purring begins with nursing, as mothers purr to reassure their kittens.

Interestingly, cats may also purr when stressed, such as during a vet visit or when facing other cats. In these situations, purring acts as a calming gesture.

For wild felids like cheetahs, purring is limited to nursing. However, for domestic cats, it has become part of their daily interactions with humans. This change traces back to 12,000 years ago, when humans transitioned from nomadic lifestyles to settled farming communities. As agriculture developed, rodents began to threaten grain stores, leading humans to welcome wild cats, particularly the African wildcat, into their villages to control pests.

Over time, humans selectively favored more docile and sedentary cats. While wild counterparts might not survive due to their traits, in villages and captivity, these cats thrived. Consequently, cats that communicated more effectively with humans, through meowing and purring, became the norm.

The bond between a cat and its owner also influences behavior. If an owner responds positively to purring with affection or food, the cat is likely to continue this behavior as a form of communication.

Moreover, when cats purr, humans experience a sense of well-being. Listening to a cat purr can trigger the production of serotonin, known as the happiness hormone, while the vibrations stimulate the release of endorphins, which have calming effects. So, the next time your cat purrs, remember it’s a mutually beneficial exchange.
