In a distressing case of animal cruelty, a maid in Singapore was sentenced to nine months in jail for beating a dog named Boyboy, leading to its death. The incident occurred on January 22, 2024, when Junny Lal Awm Pui, 26, acted on the instructions of her employer to discipline the 15-year-old poodle.
The court heard that Boyboy suffered severe pain and trauma due to repeated beatings, which likely caused a head concussion and ultimately its death. Despite being instructed to discipline the dog, the maid had the option to control her actions, according to District Judge Ow Yong Tuck Leong.
Boyboy was adopted from the street by its owner, Lai, and had been living with the maid's employer, Heng, since July 2023. The prosecution revealed that Heng had previously directed the maid to hang the dog on a balcony railing for exposure to the sun, further highlighting the neglect and cruelty involved in this case.
The National Parks Board (NParks) is investigating the employer's role in this incident, emphasizing their commitment to addressing cases of animal cruelty seriously. They encourage the public to report any suspected cases of abuse.
