Brazil Fines Apple and Google $3.1 Million Over FaceApp Privacy Violations

Jakarta, January 9, 2025 - A Brazilian judge has determined that the distribution of FaceApp on Apple and Google’s app stores violates user privacy. The photo-editing application, which utilizes AI to manipulate user images, has led to a fine of $3.1 million (approximately R$50.3 million) for both tech giants.

According to reports, while Apple and Google are not responsible for the app's development, their decision to host FaceApp in Brazil has been deemed a legal breach. The app's capabilities include altering skin color, lip size, and aging effects, raising concerns over user data theft.

Regulators in Brazil have expressed alarm over these privacy infringements, noting that users are asked for consent upon using the app, yet the application exploits legal loopholes in its contracts.
