Elon Musk, billionaire and owner of X, has announced that the AI chatbot Grok will now be available for free to all users on the platform.
Previously, Grok was accessible only to Premium subscribers. The chatbot can now be utilized by all users, albeit with certain limitations.
As of December 9, 2024, users can access the chatbot on both the X website and mobile app. The feature, currently in beta, operates using the Grok 2 + FLUX AI model and includes a Fun Mode that allows for more casual and humorous interactions.
To use Grok AI, users need to click the Grok AI icon located on the side for the desktop version and at the bottom for the mobile app.
According to Forbes, non-Premium users face restrictions, such as a maximum of 10 prompts every two hours and limits on image analysis and generation, capped at three and four images per day, respectively.
New users must have an X account that is at least seven days old and linked to a phone number to access Grok.
The Grok 2 model, which powers the AI chatbot, was released in August 2024. X AI states, “We are thrilled to release the early preview of Grok-2, a significant advancement from the previous model, Grok-1.5, featuring cutting-edge capabilities in chatting, coding, and reasoning.”
One of Grok 2's standout features is its ability to generate images, supported by integration with the FLUX.1 model from Black Forest Labs, allowing users to create realistic images just by typing text prompts.
Grok 2 reportedly outperforms other popular AI assistants like Claude 3.5 Sonnet and GPT-4-Turbo in certain tests, showcasing advanced capabilities in reasoning, mathematics, and coding.
As of now, there has been no official announcement from X regarding the free launch of the Grok AI chatbot for users.
